TWIST Exclusive: TWIST Chats With Kenton Duty!

We recently hung out with Kenton Duty, who plays Gunther on Shake It Up! Kenton Duty was super nice and couldn't wait to dish to us about the upcoming Shake It Up special, funny moments from set, and even how he deals with bullies! Check out our exclusive interview with Kenton Duty and his video shout out to TWIST readers below! And don't forget to tune into the season finale special of Shake It Up, airing on August 1st on the Disney Channel!

Kenton-Duty-qanda.jpg

TWIST: Can you tell us a little bit about what's coming up on the rest of this season of Shake It Up?
KD:
Well, the big season finale special is called 'Made in Japan', so that sort of gives it away - something amazing happens and we all get to go to Japan. A funny thing happens with Deuce, though, where he actually isn't IN Japan! That's all I'll say about that. But for Gunther and Tinka, something AWFUL happens to us, and we end up losing something very dear to us at the airport. We end up going through this trial, and we end up finding a new love while we're in Japan. Something else happens to us with legal authorities, but CeCe and Rocky really come through for us at the end.

TWIST: How do you relate to your character Gunther?
KD:
We're both confident people! We both enjoy making people happy and laugh.

TWIST: What is your favorite behind-the-scenes memory from set?
KD:
There's this one scene where Tinka and Gunther have to wear the opposite of what they normally wear. That was fun 'cause we walked on set and everybody's like, 'You know, you guys actually pull this off quite nicely. We were thinking this would look weird, but this looks really good!' So we were like, 'All right! Cool!' In that scene, I had to wear eyeliner - 'guyliner'! So, for a few days after that I actually had eyeliner on, and everybody was like, 'Oh, gosh!'

TWIST: That's really funny. So, you've spoken out a lot against bullying. Do you have a personal experience with bullying and do you have any advice that you could share about how to deal with bullies?
KD:
I was teased a little bit being the short kid in school. Don't really give into it. Stick with your friends, 'cause your friends are your friends for a reason. Bullies aren't your friends, even if they're like, 'Oh, no, this is my bud, we're just messing around!' When they say that they're just saying that to fool themselves 'cause they feel a sense of power when they're doing it, but they probably don't feel good about it in the end. If you're being bullied, you've got to tell your parents, because your parents are there for you and they will always be there for you. They're the ones that you need to go to with most of your problems, unless you can figure it out yourself - and with bullying, you can't figure it out yourself because it normally leads to violence, and that's never the answer. So, always go to your parents.

TWIST: That's good advice. So, what do you look for in a girl?
KD:
She has to have a sense of humor. I need a girl that can laugh and joke around, but she also has to be the kind of girl that I would be okay with taking home to my family. She can't take herself too seriously. Like I said, she has to be able to just joke and goof around, and hang out in sweats and jeans and stuff like that.

TWIST: That's cool. How would you describe your ideal date?
KD:
Something that's goofy and fun, and completely low-key.

TWIST: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects that you're doing?
KD:
My music! That, and Shake It Up! We're hoping to get my music out sometime this year. We don't know when, but I'm really excited for the fans to see it because they're really enjoying what Adam Irigoyen and I have done for Disney. So, I can't wait to see what they're going to think about my personal stuff!

TWIST: Great! Thank you so much for speaking with us!
KD:
Thank you!

XOXO,

TWIST Exclusive: TWIST Chats With Step Up Revolution Stars Kathryn McCormick and Ryan Guzman!

Kathryn-McCormick-Ryan-Guzman-Step-Up-4.jpg

We just sat down with Kathryn McCormick and Ryan Guzman who star in the brand new movie Step Up Revolution! The dancing duo told us all about filming in Miami, preparing for the intense dance scenes, and what makes this movie SO different from the first three Step Up movies! Read our conversation below and be sure to check out Step Up Revolution when it comes out in theaters July 27!

XOXO,
TWIST

T: Tell us about Step Up 4!
K: It is the fourth of the franchise and they're actually naming it Step Up Revolution, which is pretty cool. They're kind of reinventing the franchise and adding a lot of different dance styles to it. It has a completely different energy then the ones that you've seen before. As you've seen in the beginning, the first one started out and it was mainly the love story that everyone was attached to. From there it turned more into the dance battling, and the dance was what really stood out in Step Up 2 and 3. It's like the story meets the dance and it's not just a movie where you're like, 'Okay this is a great dance movie, so I can't wait for the dance scenes.' In the dance scenes, you're so connected to the story and wondering what's going to happen next, that the dance is just sort of a catalyst for the story. You just become so invested in every part and neither outweighs the other.
R: Like she said, there are so many different dance styles. I mean, contemporary, salsa, hip hop, everything you could possibly think about.

T: Awesome! What are your characters like?
K: I play the role of Emily Anderson, and she is moving from Cleveland, Ohio, with her father, who is played by Peter Gallagher. He's a realtor, and he's coming in and trying to take over this hotel that Sean works at. Emily just dropped out of college so this is her last opportunity to audition to be a professional dancer at this company in Miami. She's coming there with the hopes that her dream's coming true. She's trying to find freedom in her dancing. So through that, she meets Sean and sees where his dance mob is going in the direction of their dancing and there's something about them where she's like, 'That's really what I want.' So this is kind of a story of Emily rebelling for the first time, seeing how what her dad does actually affects people, learning to have a voice and stand up for herself, fighting for what she wants, and fighting for love for the first time. It's kind of a battle between her dreams, her relationship with her dad, and her love for Sean. More than anything, she realizes that she doesn't dance because it's fun or it looks good. She dances because she has no other option. There's actually a huge impact that she can make through what she does.
R: Sean is this leader, this community leader and the leader of the dance mob with his best friend, played by Mischa Gabriel, who plays Eddie in the movie. My character is a really loving and open guy. He really believes that his mob can become something great. So what they do is they enter this YouTube contest and through flashmobs, trying to get the attention of people, get signed through certain different things through YouTube. That's his route until his eyes are opened through a girl, Emily. He realizes that he loves his family and everything, but now there's a new love in his life. He has to figure out how to deal with that and what areas it is going to affect. Throughout the movie, you see Sean grow and falter. By the end, I think he likes who he becomes.

T: Cool, and you didn't have any dance experience before the movie - is that right?
R: No, no dance experience.

T: So how did you prepare for it? What kind of classes did you have to take?
R: Actually, I didn't do any classes. The audition process was about a month and a half long. They had four acting auditions and four dance auditions. So, I don't know how I got through those auditions, but I did, and they saw something in me. I think initially I thought they were going to dance-double me, but I'm very avid about not having a dance double.
K: This is a very competitive guy.
R: Very competitive. I wanted to give everything I possibly could to this movie. I decided not to speak up, but show what I had to offer. They had a three-week training period before shooting the movie in Miami to learn all the combos and learn all the dances. I ended up doing it all and the director and producers came in and wanted to see how it all looked together. I actually went in and did the choreography with everybody else. I think I kind of surprised the producers and the director because after they saw what I did they were like, 'Oh, we don't need a dance double anymore. This guy can do what we want.'
K: I think he had the natural groove inside of him. He's very connected to his body. He understands where his body is supposed to go and he understands what feels good and what doesn't. I think more than anything, it was trying to develop that trust with each other and knowing that the professional dancers around him weren't judging him, that they loved him and wanted him to do well. It was a matter of strengthening his confidence, because he had the movement inside of him already. It was really interesting to watch somebody just dive in and be fearless. It was so inspiring.
R: I definitely wouldn't have become the dancer that I am today without the 20 professional dancers around me and Kathryn and everybody behind me teaching me and leading me along the way. Having so much talent to pull from and feed off of, it kind of creates this new monster inside yourself and creates this opportunity you never thought you'd have.

T: That's really exciting! Kathryn, you obviously have a huge dance background. Did So You Think You Can Dance prepare you for something like this?
K: Doing the show, you learn so much about who you are and how you work under pressure. There are so many times that you go on that stage and you don't know how you're going to pull off what you're doing. More than anything, I think I learned how to connect to stories in a very short period of time. You have 6 hours on that show to learn and perfect a dance. From that, it's not just the dance. You're actually sometimes telling really deep and meaningful stories. I feel like each thing I've done has prepared me for becoming a greater storyteller and being able to relate to this and act for the first time. I didn't really realize, but my life has kind of been the training process for this one moment. I think that's how it usually happens. You don't realize what you're learning until you've learned it and you're in a space to use it.

T: So how does this Step Up movie really set itself apart from the previous three?
R: There's no battling, that's for sure. But I think that gives it so much more. With the kind of dance that we do, flash mobs, you're actually able to show art through dance. You'll see things in the movie that you never thought you could possibly see in a movie. We have a variety though. We have parkour guys in here, we have all different styles of hip hop dancing, and other styles of dancing. I think that gives it this crazy extra flavor to the movie.
K: And it's all kind of unexpected. I think in most Step Up movies, you expect to see dancing, and you know when it's coming. We're doing flash mobs so it's in certain areas where you're supposed to look like a normal person. So say you're walking through a plaza. You're all supposed to look like you're just going to work in business suits in a plaza, but all of a sudden we all stop and cause this ruckus among everything going on. It's a little less expected, which I think is pretty cool. It's not only the dancers, but the community is involved in the dancing as well. So I think the voice through art is something huge that you have seen a little bit of in the other movies, but not as much as you'll see in this one.
R: We take all the skill from all the other movies, but we also put emotion behind it. We give you something to feel when you dance.
K: To be more specific, you know why we're there so the whole audience is fighting for that because they know that we're taking a risk. They know that this may be our last chance to really fight for our lives and our dreams.

T: You shot in Miami, so what was that like? What were you doing when you weren't filming?
K: Miami is really hot. I grew up in Augusta, Georgia so I'm used to humidity, but once you live in LA for a certain amount of time you get so spoiled. You come back and it's like 'It's hot! I'm melting!' But Miami is beautiful, so beautiful. It's cool because it rains kind of often, but only for like 20 minute periods, so it's kind of refreshing. Basically, I was on set as much as I possibly could be because we had this core group that was Ryan, Mischa and I. We were super close. We were always on set with each other. When one was filming, the others were on set to support. No matter what at the end of the day, if we were having a hard time, we could kind of look at each other in the eye, and we knew we had someone behind us. So when we weren't on set, I know I - Emily is completely separate from the mob and Sean's world - so there were so many times when I wasn't filming or didn't have rehearsals and they did, so I would be in yoga class. I would always be grocery shopping or trying to run or work out or do something like that - just trying to be as active as possible because I'm used to dancing three hours every single day. It came to a point where for a whole month, I was just acting. It was such a weird thing for me.
R: I was pretty much on set all the time. I think I only had like three days off. Literally, I'm in every scene in the movie. When I wasn't on set, I'd be at my house, but I'd choose to go back on set because it just felt like home. So while she was doing her scenes, I'd go visit her, go watch her act or dance, or do whatever she's got to do. If I wasn't doing that I was in rehearsal or running a new combo for the next dance. It was really fast-paced for me and really difficult, but fun at the same time.

T: So why do TWIST readers absolutely have to check out the movie when it comes out this summer?
K: They have to! For one, they're going to be entertained. It's going to be a really good time and an excuse to get all of your friends together, to come to a movie that will not only keep you at the edge of your seats but it will also make you feel something. It's so relatable, like falling in love for the first time, having insecurities, having fears, having doubts, having something taken away from you. I think it's so relatable and it's a journey that they can watch and hopefully be inspired by to face some of the issues that they're going through. They'll see how Sean and Emily did it and hopefully be encouraged to take those next steps to developing who they really are and what they really want.
R: You'll leave the movie inspired, or at least wanting to dance after. The movie is just so fun. It's the ultimate form of entertainment. There's no way you can watch the movie and not want to do something or become better at something. It's a great movie.

T: Do you have any other upcoming projects?
K: Coming from a dance background, I did this movie, and obviously now, I want to do more acting. I've been getting into an acting class. I have my fingers dipped in a lot of different areas. I'm still training dance-wise and performing as much as I can. I'm acting, taking voice lessons. I'm teaching a little bit as well, so I don't really know what's next. I'm doing a few independent films and short projects and things like that but right now, I'm just trying to invest my time in stories that I know will have an impact on the viewers watching. Whether that means it's something that pays a lot of money or doesn't pay anything at all, more than anything, I want something I know people will leave having a better outlook on their life and feeling like they're not alone in certain situations. I'm just in that place where I'm trying to figure out where my time is needed the most and how it can be the most beneficial.

T: Totally! Thanks for taking the time to hang out with us today!
K: Thank you!
R: Thanks, TWIST!

TWIST Exclusive: TWIST Chats With Taylor Spreitler!

We recently chatted with Taylor Spreitler, who plays Lennox on the totally hilarious ABC Family sitcom Melissa and Joey! Taylor Spreitler was super psyched to talk to us about the upcoming season, the funny pranks she's pulled on set, and who she'd love to see guest star on the show! Check out our exclusive interview below, and make sure to tune into the season premiere of Melissa and Joey on May 30th on ABC Family!

Taylor-Spreitler-qanda.jpg

TWIST: Can you tell us about what's in store on this season of Melissa and Joey?
TS:
Craziness! Lots and lots of craziness. We have a lot of guest stars this season, like Gregg Sulkin and Debi Mazar! All of us are getting into lots and lots of trouble.

TWIST: What can we expect from your character Lennox this season?
TS:
She definitely grows up in this season! Her aunt and her 'manny' are starting to trust her more.

TWIST: How do you relate to Lennox?
TS:
We're actually a LOT alike! I just don't have an Aunt Mel or 'manny', and she's a little bit more dramatic than I am. The writers write episodes about things that I feel very strongly about, and I get to portray that, which I love. She's definitely a little bit louder than I am, though! (laughs)

TWIST: Okay, cool! What is your favorite on-set memory from Melissa and Joey?
TS:
My favorite memory is definitely my graduation! I didn't get to go to real high school, and I didn't get to have a graduation, so Melissa Joan Hart threw me a graduation on set. There was a podium and I had a cap and gown! Melissa gave a speech and I had cake. It was AWESOME! I got a diploma that she and Joey Lawrence signed.

TWIST: That's a really cool memory! So, what is it like on set working with Nick Robinson and the other cast?
TS:
Nick and I definitely pull pranks a lot! Last week we were just running around the lot, basically annoying everyone that we could. We get along but we're just like brother and sister in real life: we love each other, but we definitely get into our fights and bicker a lot.

TWIST: Do you have any pranks that you guys pulled together that come to mind?
TS:
Well, we Saran-Wrapped the doors to our dressing rooms one day and tried to prank Joey! We actually videotaped the entire thing, but he realized it before he walked in! So now we just have this video of Joey calling us out and then turning around and pulling pranks on us all day. Like, he put up the Saran Wrap and of course we're the ones that walk into it, not him (laughs). So, it kind of backfired. Joey's a hard person to prank! We've tried MANY times, and he just knows better! I guess growing up with two younger brothers like he did, you kind of get used to it.

TWIST: Yeah, I bet. So, it sounds like you guys all have great chemistry together!
TS:
Yes! How we are on the show is how we are in real life. Joey's the one who's always like, 'You guys should think about this!' And Melissa's like, 'Let's just go!' or 'Let's have fun!' She's definitely like my crazy aunt.

TWIST: If you could have anyone guest star on the show, who would it be?
TS:
Hmmm... Betty White! She could play someone - anyone! I just think anything she does is hilarious. And her show Hot in Cleveland films right next to Melissa and Joey! So, she could just walk on over. I think that would be fun!

TWIST: You're also a singer. Can you tell us about that?
TS:
I sang a lot when I was little, and it's kind of how I got into all of this. It's something that I definitely loved doing when I was younger. And I actually thought about recording an album a couple of years ago, but my schedule was just way too crazy at the time. Everyone keeps on trying to get me to get back into it. Actually, I love it so much, but I have a huge fear of singing in front of people. I can act in front of a live audience, but for some reason singing freaks me out. I had to sing in an episode in Melissa and Joey last season in front of a live audience and the entire time I was FREAKING. OUT. I guess it's something that I should get over, but it's just one of those things!

TWIST: So, would you want to record an album in the near future?
TS:
Like I said, I almost did and my schedule got crazy. It's always kind of been in the back of my mind. And my sister is a rapper, and she just finished her first EP. I spent a lot of time in the studio with her and met a lot of people through her. She kind of inspired me to possibly get back in the studio and do it! But it won't be coming out anytime soon!

TWIST: Thank you so much for chatting with us!
TS:
Thank you!

Jessica-Ashley.jpg

We just chatted with YouTube sensation Jessica Ashley! The up-and-coming artist told us all about her sound, her first official music video, and the super famous musician she wants to collaborate with (HINT: He got his start on YouTube too!). Check out our conversation below and be sure to check out Jessica's YouTube channel!

XOXO,
TWIST

TWIST: Can you describe your sound in the music that you make?
JA: I think the music that I make is approachable to all age groups. I have a few records coming out on my EP called Prelude in June. There is a song called "Neverland", which is very young, fresh, fun, and romantic. There are also a few serious and more emotional records that are more relatable to for the older audience, like my new song, "I tried". Overall, I try to convey an emotional and powerful message.

TWIST: Where do you get your love of music? Who are some of your inspirations?
JA: I've always loved music. I've been playing the piano since I was a little kid, so I've always been around music. I think Alicia Keys, Adele, and Mariah Carey are always my biggest inspirations. I would even say that Selena Gomez is an inspiration to me because her music is always fun and flirty.

TWIST: You write your own music, right?
JA: Yep! I also co-write. If I hear a song that a different writer wrote and I really relate to it, I'll try and sing that song too.

TWIST: Where do you draw your inspiration from when you're writing your music?
JA: I get a lot of my inspiration from personal experiences. Honestly, I also draw a lot of inspiration from movies, like The Notebook and The Vow. Something will click, and I'll suddenly go to the piano and start writing.

TWIST: That's really cool! Can you tell me about your new music video? What was it like to film it?
JA: "Souvenir" is the first official music video that I've ever done, and it is also one of the first songs that I've released so far. The production of the music video was a fun yet lengthy process, and everybody on set was really cool! It was really exciting to have a big role in the writing of the script and concept. "Souvenir" has already been released on YouTube!

TWIST: Congratulations! You've worked with a lot of cool producers and writers in the last year. Who are some artists whom you are absolutely dying to work with?
JA: I would love to work with Mio; he is my favorite writer in the game right now! Obviously, everyone wants to work with Bieber. I think it would be really cool to do a duet with him, especially because I love his new sound; it's so fresh! I also want to do a duet with Adele or a feature with Alicia Keys.

TWIST: Why do you think our readers will love your music?
JA: I think they will love it because they are looking for the same things that I was in search of at that age. They want music to be fun, and also a way for them to express themselves. I feel like a lot of my songs will really get their attention, especially my new single, "Neverland". The music video is about a girl, who is trapped in a cruel world. Suddenly, she meets this guy and he takes her to Neverland, which is this new, magical world. It's clearly a play on Peter Pan and Wendy. I feel like a lot of girls and even boys will be able to relate to it.

TWIST: Was "Neverland" the video that you filmed with Justin Gaston?
JA: Yes! That was an amazing experience!

TWIST: I bet it was! Do you have any upcoming projects that our readers should know about?
JA: Yes, definitely! My EP is coming out in early June and it's called Prelude. Everyone should look out for it! I would really appreciate the support! My YouTube page is youtube/jessicaashleyk, so stay tuned! There is a cover coming out soon and more videos are going to be posted. Also, I am performing at Bitter End in NYC almost every week in June, along with performances at Pianos mostly Friday and Saturday nights. I'll keep that all posted on my Twitter. You can follow me @XOJessicaAshley.

TWIST: Awesome! Thanks for chatting with us!
JA: Thanks!

TWIST Style: Sun Safety Tips with Dr. Amy Derick!

Sun-Safety-Dr-Derick.jpg

Happy Memorial Day girls!

Now that it's the unofficial start of summer, we know you're all hoping for lots of long, lazy days at the beach and the pool -- but it's super important to be safe when you're in the sun! We talked to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Amy Derick from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), who debunked a few tanning myths and shared her most important tips for sun safety!

1. Wear an SPF of at least 30!
"SPF of 15 doesn't give enough protection so we recommend an SPF of 30," Dr. Derick advises.

2. Reapply, Reapply, Reapply!
"You don't get a true SPF of 30 unless you reapply every hour and a half or so. Also, if you're wearing makeup, there's a way of powdering on sunscreen -- Colorescience has one -- you can sprinkle it on after you've done your base layer so you don't mess up your makeup when you reapply sunscreen!" she says.

3. The problems AREN'T just in the far-off future!

"Right away it's more cosmetic problems --  you can get an ugly color, blotchiness, brown spots or freckles from the sun. Plus, if you get a painful burn it hurts and can leave a mark! And then as you get older you can start to show wrinkles, uneven tones and of course can develop cancer," Dr. Derick tells TWIST.

4. Sunscreen alone isn't enough!
"Make sure you wear hats, and if you have a summer job like lifeguarding, you need to make sure you are under an umbrella. Even if you're wearing sunscreen, if you're outside all day it's still not 100% protective," Dr. Derick says.

5. You don't need a base tan!
"We get the base tan issue a lot before people go on vacation. The base tan has an SPF of about 5, so you do get some protection from burning but it's not very much and it's still damaging to the skin. So in my opinion it's not a good idea. I don't like the idea of a base tan -- especially not from a tanning bed!" she tells us.

And the most important message Dr. Derick had about sun safety for teenage girls?

"The number one thing for you to know is that if you practice sun safety early you can prevent a lot of damage -- both cosmetic issues but also skin cancer. You don't want to be in a situation where you're fighting for your life in your late 20s or early 30s." she stresses.

For more info on sun safety, you can visit the AAD's SPOT skin cancer website. Plus, make sure to check out our upcoming summer issues for more safe sun coverage!

Have a great weekend TWIST girls, and remember to be safe! Also, make sure to pick up our June issue, on stands now, where we answer your Burning Beauty Questions!
