XOXO,
TWIST
TWIST: Could you tell us about Kewlbites?
Reed Alexander: Kewlbites is my new website for kids all about healthy eating, exercising and lifestyle. I started the process of beginning Kewlbites about a year ago. I was overweight, lacking energy, and wanted to make a change. Unfortunately, there was nothing out there for me from a kid's perspective; I wanted something for me and kids my age. So, I had to improvise a little bit and make my own way. I found a lot of great books and online recourses. I knew that if I was going to go out and have a great dinner or stay home and cook I was going to have to come up with recipes, tips, ideas and strategies to make sure that I would stay on track. I made fitness less of a chore and much more fun. Now I share all of that on Kewlbites and its really fun. I get to connect with not only the Kewlbites and iCarly audience, but also with parents and sometimes even medical experts and trainers.
TWIST: The Kewlbites website is really unique, can you tell us about the design?
RA: Designing the site was so much fun! Health is a serious topic and there are a lot of different components that you have to remember. On Kewlbites, you can learn about stress reduction, food, exercise, and so many other factors that are involved in living a healthy lifestyle. But I knew that I wanted to make it fun. I wanted to talk about this very serious topic in a fun way, which is why everything on the site is interactive. It's very visual and virtual. We have a kitchen on the site so kids can click on the fridge or click on the blender or something and get to a destination.
TWIST: What tips do you have to make exercising fun?
RA: Circuit routines are so much more fun than just sitting there with the weights and running 8 miles. One we did the other day, which I think a lot of kids can do, is that we took 10 blocks and we said 'We're building a wall.' On the other side of the room we took a block, ran to one side, and did 10 jumping jacks. Then we ran back, got another block, did 9 jumping jacks, ran back, put it down, and did 8 jumping jacks. That was really exciting because at the end you got to build this really cool wall of these big foam bricks and at the same time we were exercising.
TWIST: Do you have any tips for healthy eating?
RA: Absolutely! Really healthy snacks are so easy to make. When you're going to your locker, instead of grabbing the candy bar why not grab trail mix that has some chocolate chips in it? That's going give you energy and it tastes good. In the summer time, smoothies are so fantastic -- who doesn't love a delicious smoothie? We also have photos of recipes and stuff on the website. There are also a ton of interviews from kids in the industry from Nickelodeon and Disney.
TWIST: Thanks for chatting with us!
RA: Thank you!
